Scenarios Where a Referral is Appropriate
- Long term sickness absence (more than four week with no foreseeable return to work date).
- Frequent short-term sickness absence.
- Concerns that the employee may have work-related health problems or that their health is being aggravated by work factors.
- Difficulties coping on return to work after being absent following a serious illness or injury, or due to a disability.
- Possible underlying ill health or disability that may be contributing to performance issues.

Why Are Management Referrals Helpful?
Employee absence is a significant cost for many organisations. Effective sickness absence management is about supporting employees with health issues to stay in or return to work. An occupational health assessment can be an extremely beneficial part of managing sickness absence, especially as the workforce ages and individuals are more likely to develop long-term health conditions and/or disabilities. An individual may still be able to return to work during their recovery or whilst still experiencing symptoms, and we can advise on an appropriate phased return to work, rehabilitation plan and reasonable adjustments to enable the individual to function as optimally as possible taking into account their medical condition and the requirements of the Equality Act (2010).
What Do Management Referrals Involve?
Our team will carry out a thorough assessment of the employee’s health conditions in relation to their job role and working environment. We assess their current treatment and provide advice on self-help strategies that may help the employee to improve their health and wellbeing. We’ll provide an impartial opinion on the employee’s fitness to work and the ways in which you can support them going forward. Where possible, we will provide an opinion on the short-term and long-term prognosis.
The advice we provide is in the form of a high quality, easy to understand, evidence-based report which helps you to understand the likely impact of the health condition on your business so that you can make informed decisions on sound medical advice. Appointments are available within one week, and the report is produced within 48 hours.
