OHS COVID-19 statement
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have worked to ensure business continuity and that our client’s occupational health needs have still been met in the safest way possible. We keep up-to-date with the ever-changing government advice to provide you with the most up-to-date advice as possible. We are currently providing most services virtually (by telephone or video), however, in certain circumstances we are providing some face-to-face assessments, with a thorough risk assessment and in a COVID-secure way.
COVID-19 Fitness for work and vulnerability assessments
With the easing of government restrictions and lifting of shielding advice, it is understandable that some employees may feel apprehensive about returning to work, especially if they have underlying health conditions, or other significant risk factors. We offer return to work assessments (after illness, testing or isolation), or general assessments on fitness for work in relation to COVID-19 (if the employee has health conditions, risk factors or concerns). Using a COVID-19 risk assessment tool, we will take into account the concerns of the individual, their general health status, and other risk factors. We provide a report that advises on the individual’s vulnerability levels and any additional measures or adjustments to help reduce their risk of contracting COVID-19 from work.
Health surveillance during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Health surveillance is a type of screening assessment that helps identify at an early stage if an employee’s health is being adversely affected by their work. It also helps identify individuals who have an underlying health condition that may be made worse by the work they do, so that additional measures can be put in place to keep them safe if necessary.
(HSE) have put out regular statements during the COVID-19 pandemic on safety measures for conducting surveillance balancing the need to protect the health, safety and welfare of workers and practitioners with the current restraints due to the pandemic.
The guidance was last updated on 31st August 2021.
Previous guidance allowed deferral of some medicals subject to a satisfactory remote assessment. However, for any medicals due after 1st September 2021, face-to-face assessments for health surveillance and safety-critical medicals should be subjects to a suitable and sufficient risk assessment and continue to follow the relevant UK government guidance on working safely. If health surveillance or safety critical medicals require spirometry, it should be subject to a suitable and sufficient risk assessment and appropriate controls put in place, including provision of suitable personal protective equipment.
